Music – With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.
WizKid and Blaq Jerzee – “Blow”
In Nigeria, the approach to releasing music is typically formulaic: Drop a single; if the single doesn’t connect, drop another; if the single does connect, throw it on an EP to hopefully push the song further. But WizKid doesn’t play those games, and today the unpredictable Lagos-born pop star surprise dropped SoundMan Vol. 1, a collaborative EP with a star-studded rotation of guests. Really, the purpose of SoundMan Vol. 1 is to remind the world of his power and the project does exactly that. It’s a 7-track display of the genreless versatility and silky melody that has influenced rising stars from Nigeria to the UK. “Blow,” his first of two collaborations with the producing and singing dual-threat Blaq Jerzee, is the EP’s DJ set cheat code, as WizKid graces the sweet instrumentation and calm bounce with his warm vocals. You do what you want when you’re popping.
